I have just visited DrupalModules.com after reading his (John Forsythe) post on Planet Drupal, "Please note that DrupalModules.com will be down for approximately 5-10 minutes at 11:45 GMT, as I'm migrating the site over to WordPress" (http://blamcast.net/articles/drupalmodules-com-migrating-to-wordpress). And, I have to ask why the move?
From the outside looking in, everything from the theme layout to the blocks, to the top down content roll, looks like it could be done using Drupal. So, why choose WordPress for a site that provides information on all things Drupal?
Now, the service he offers seems to be of value, but is it not, perhaps, sending the wrong message regarding Drupal since he is using WordPress? Being fairly new to the Drupal community, this just caught my eye and I wondered what was the reason behind the move.

I just read Jeff Eaton post on Mirrating to WordPress, http://jeff.viapositiva.net/archives/2009/04/migrating-wordpress, and understand his reason for the move.
In all fairness, perhaps John Forsythe's reaseon was similar but since he offers a third party service instead of support for Drupal core as well as module patches (to my knowledge), I doubt it. But, then again, maybe so.

Can you really migrate a Drupal site to WordPress in 5 to 10 minutes? When does the time start ?? After making backups, after deactivating all of your contribute mods?
Is it POSSIBLE?

Lullabot has, in fact, been doing a lot of work trying to create a streamlined version of Drupal. And, they have made a video to highlight many of their usability ideas and show how they were implemented...
No joke!

Isn't that quite fast to migrate from Drupal to Wordpress in just 5-10 mins? I've also read some other post in articles, research paper and blogs about the transfer and I'm still looking for the best and fast way to do it like the one you were planning for.
1) IT'S A BLOODY JOKE
1) IT'S A BLOODY JOKE MATE.
2) MIGRATING FROM DRUPAL TO WORDPRESS IS GOING BACKWARDS, YOU GIT.
3) I'm currently working on the WordPress Import module, (have a client with only 50K nodes or so), if anyone else needs to go in the proper direction, WORDPRESS to DRUPAL.
4) Can we get some Mollum in here? The SPAM posts are getting to be a bit much.
Mollum has been installed on
Mollum has been installed on the site since it first came online almost a year ago. We do our best to filter what we can but sometimes things get through.
This is the reality of having a site that has a page rank of 4 or better (which just happened recently) and that allows for community contributed content. We are a prime target for spammers.
There are a few solutions which come to mind that I can offer you. :)
1) Unsubscribe from being notified of content updates. This can be accomplished from your profile page. Then check the site on a periodic basis for new content.
2) We can add you to the pool of people on the site who have the ability to report/delete spam through the Mollum control panel. This has the benefit of helping with the solution rather than griping about the problem.
3) We can remove your account.
Understand that this group is a volunteer effort. We do the best we can when we can. If you would like to help add to that effort then please feel free to get involved.

Respectfully:
1) I have already volunteered to help :)
2) I have commented a number of times and no one involved with your organization has responded :)
3) Though I do have your email :), I don't make it to meetings much (being stationed in Mexico City right now, and in Ghent for the few months before).
4) The volume of forms spam you are receiving seems odd, even for Mollum alone. I am subscribed to several Drupal group sites worldwide and have not seen this issue. You may need to do be something else (such as blocking connections via a IP blacklist, or delaying or moderating posts from new accounts).
5) Is this the only PR 4 site you run? There are standards. And readers' time is valuable; waste it, on any site, and you've lost your audience (which you don't seem to mind). Equally, the potential messages clients could take from this site-- that paying money for a site is only going to get them this mess, or that the people who built the site do not deal with such problems-- are enough reason, to focus on fixing a problem like this.
6) As I said before, glad to help in any way I can.
Jamie: It seems to me that
Jamie:
It seems to me that you would eliminate the spam if:
1) You require email validation for all new members/users
2) Set permissions so that only authenticated users could make comments.
3) Establish a policy of what consists of spam
3) Shut down the user's account if they violate the policy.
Done and done.
kthomas makes valid points in that no one seems to want to address this problem or communicate directly regarding this problem. I have encountered the same reluctance to directly talk about the issue. I do not receive spam from other member organizations. This is a problem and as a group of web experts, you should boldly address the problem and not just state what has (ineffectively) been done before.
The options presented to "Unsubscribe from being notified of content updates" or "We can remove your account" if you don't like it is equivalent to sticking your head in the sand and hoping that by silencing complaints the problem will go away. This is an inappropriate response from an organization that should be promoting open communications.
Surely it is not necessary to give additional people the ability to report spam in the Mollum module. What is the person doing now who currently has that volunteer assignment? Shouldn't one person be enough?
Hugh
Thank you for the
Thank you for the suggestions.
1) We have validation turned on - the spammers know how to get around this.
2) Permissions are set so only authenticated users can post comments.
3) Spam is spam and is usually obvious :)
4) We delete spam accounts when they are discovered
I can assure you that we do our best to actively monitor the spam on the site. Typically it is removed as soon as it is posted, but if someone does not happen to be monitoring the site it can take some time to be deleted.
The suggestion to remove someones account is of course the last option but may be the only one that will ultimately fix the issue for some people or at least make it bearable. No one has contacted me directly or as far as I know any of the other people in the group about the spam issues and offered to help with it. If they do we will be happy to include them in helping us work on a solution.
I will be installing some additional protection this weekend that I hope this will help.
Thank you for everyone's input and patience.

So it looks like we're
So it looks like we're dealing with people, not bots...hmmm...you know this would require some real thought, but maybe we could use the CAPTCHA pack validation module that lets you set the question and the answer to it...perhaps there is a way to phrase the question in such a way that people who are honestly into developing Drupal, etc would be able to answer it, but spammers would have a hard enough time they wouldn't bother?
Also, I would offer as a suggestion--if you aren't already--instead of simply deleting spammer accounts, block the users, and add an access rule that denies sign-ups from that email address (and if they're using a throwaway domain to host their email accounts, block the domain).
Probably stuff you've already considered, but my two cents nonetheless.
Good suggestions all. I find
Good suggestions all. I find that constructive ideas will always yield more fruit than veiled passive aggressive douche-baggery. Like Jamie said, spam is spam and that's that. Whether it be people or bots the fact of the matter is this: this is a site that is run on a volunteer basis with no monetary compensation for any time put into it. Going off on targeted tangents about PR and standards in this context is just comes across as excess chest-beating from someone who obviously gets there jollies trolling. Don't care what you've done, who you've done it for, or how well you did it; it's irrelevant. How about this idea: offer constructive suggestions and help and only that, or STFU and go write a module.
Oh, and offering up help as an afterthought to your itemized list of what boils down to non-sense does not justify being a dick about the issue at hand. I get the feeling the only help that would be offered by someone like that is just more criticism and not much of anything useful. Sorry, but I have a sore spot for people who act like that deadbeat dad who always offers up help but make it always come with a price: $10 worth of bullshit. Seriously, this is a community effort and you make yourself sound and look like an idiot before aforementioned community. Those who are the caretakers of this site work really hard at it ON THEIR OWN TIME and, as such, when shit happens it requires MORE OF THEIR SPARE TIME. Sorry the red carpet wasn't rolled out for you and sorry the response wasn't 7337 enough to keep your incessant need to talk shit for the sake of fluffing your peacock feathers at bay. Again, I could care less about your accomplishments. I'm talking about this thread and only this thread. I would love to see you comment like this on 4Chan and see how well that goes.
Holla and sorry about your penis.
For the record: I am no affiliated in any way with the administration or maintenance of this site. I'm just a Drupal ninja with an intense loathing of middle-aged douchebags who talk to much.
Yaeh, whatever. Have a nice
Yaeh, whatever. Have a nice life. :)
Dear Drupal Ninja: Are you
Dear Drupal Ninja: Are you implying that there is something inherently wrong with being middle-aged? Man! Talk about angry rants! Not even PASSIVE aggressive! ;^)
There would appear to be "history" that I'm not aware of previous to my interjecting a comment about spam control. Maybe the reason that I haven't seen any other negative comments is that I automatically and routinely delete most of the Drupalers messages without opening because the greatest percentage are spam. I apreciate Jamie's recent response regarding working on the problem. That is great and I hope it works. Because, as it currently stands and as far as I'm concerned, the level of spam is interferring with the group's communications. This is not a put-down to any volunteer effort, just a statement of reality.
This is a legitimate problem to be addressed. Ranting and name-calling on either side of the issue is problematic. I've already apologized directly to Jamie for any strong comments that I made. But I will continue to believe that this is a problem that needs to be addressed on an ongoing basis if Drupaler emails are not to be marginalized.
